Climate change is causing an increase in many types of extreme weather events. Heatwaves are hotter, heavy rain events are heavier, and winter storms have increased in both frequency and intensity. To date, these kinds of severe weather are among the leading causes of large-scale power outages globally. Currently, more than 58% of U.S. power outages are due to severe weather events (Source: U.S. Department of Energy).

The majority of these outages are due to damage or impact at generation sites, large transmission lines, or substations, which can create widespread interruptions for many end-users. By planning and executing a network with higher resilience, while the impact is not completely mitigated, the time taken to restore power and minimize customer impact is significantly reduced.
